Lily entered the kitchen with a sentence ready. She had seen a short message and thought she knew what Schammy meant. Schammy also had a defense ready. Between them sat a phone, a closed Bible, and many thoughts no one had explained.
Before answering, Lily opened the Bible to James 1:19-20. The passage calls every person to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. It does not say truth is unimportant. It teaches that human anger does not produce God's righteousness.
Jesus modeled this listening. In Luke 24:13-35, He walked with two sad disciples. He knew the whole truth, but first He came near, asked, and listened. Then He opened Scripture and turned their hearts toward hope. He listened to reveal truth and restore faith, not to win an argument.
The Holy Spirit keeps forming this life. John 14:26 says He teaches and brings Jesus' words to mind. His guidance never contradicts Scripture. He helps us slow down, remember truth, confess pride, and choose words that build others up, as Ephesians 4:29-32 teaches.
Practice H.E.A.R.: Halt and pray before reacting. Explore what the person meant. Ask Scripture to examine your tone. Respond with truth and kindness. Listening does not mean accepting abuse, hiding danger, or denying truth. It means seeking clarity and answering as Christ's disciple.
For kids, this can mean looking at the speaker and repeating what they heard. For teens, waiting before replying to a message. For young adults, asking a question before assuming motives. For adults, lowering the voice, owning one wrong, and opening room for prayer and wise help.
Family prompt: What changes when we listen to understand, not only to answer? Try a 60-second pause, one honest question, and a short prayer before the next hard conversation.
